With the green energy sector, we are taking a devastating risk that could cost us the future

Professor Brett Christophers, a researcher at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research at Sweden's Uppsala University, warns the Guardian, that the world is relying on private companies to deal with climate change and that this is "increasingly looking like a mistake that could cost us our planetary future". He says: “The world has basically bet the proverbial house on the private sector to save the day. The private sector is not seen as part of the answer. It is the assumed answer. However, the private sector is driven by the profit motive. If firms are forced to invest, limited profit opportunities and expectations usually mean limited investment. And in the context of electricity, limited investment in clean energy means that we will continue to rely on dirty energy sources - coal and gas - and thus CO2 emissions will continue to grow. And that's exactly what we keep seeing." (carbonbrief, more at theguardian.com)
