Forest fires, droughts, heat waves, the collapse of terrestrial and marine biodiversity… the consequences of climate change are expected to be more drastic than elsewhere in the region. The Mediterranean basin is overheating. In the region, global warming is stronger than the global average, and summer rains will be less and less frequent. Droughts and heat waves will therefore continue to lengthen and intensify, with significant impacts on water resources, agriculture, biodiversity and ecosystems in the region. But if we focus on land, the increase is no greater than elsewhere. Because the real specifics are in the sea itself. It is warming almost as fast as the globe – on average +1.1°C compared to the pre-industrial period – while the global ocean temperature has increased by 0.6°C over the last century.
