What is climate misinformation and why does it matter?

Misinformation is when people share false information or selectively present data about fossil fuel emissions or climate change that don't give the full picture, which can influence how others think about the issue. It doesn't have to be intentional - some misinformation can be the result of a simple mistake or a misunderstanding of a complex topic. An example is greenwashing, the way companies make their environmental credentials look greener than they really are. For example, some fashion brands are promoting the use of renewable natural fibers and recyclable packaging, diverting attention from the countless racks of disposable fast fashion they produce every few weeks. Disinformation, on the other hand, is when climate deniers and other groups or official organizations deliberately publish false information or spread hoaxes to promote their own agenda against climate science and pro-environment government policies.
