5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE OCEAN

As greenhouse gases continue to be pumped into the atmosphere, our ocean is rapidly deteriorating. But when it comes to climate action, protecting the planet's largest ecosystem remains overlooked and underfunded. In response, the UN is renewing its ambition to accelerate action on climate and oceans – including through the Ocean Decade and the Sustainable Development Goals – before it is too late.

The ocean seems to be reaching a tipping point. Over the past year, sea surface temperatures have broken daily records. Ninety percent of the world's large fish populations are depleted. Half of the coral reefs are destroyed. The triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity is pushing Earth, especially underwater life, to the brink of extinction.
