Final monitoring data published today by the European Environment Agency show that average CO2 emissions of new cars registered in Europe fell further in 2022 to a new low of 27 % below 2019 levels. This drop is thanks to stricter emissions targets being implemented from 2020. Emissions from commercial vehicles decreased by approximately 10 % over the same period. It found that only one producer exceeded its 2022 target and will have to pay a fee for excess emissions.
In 2022, 9.4 million new passenger cars were registered in the EU, Iceland and Norway. Their average emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) during laboratory testing, there were 108.1 g of CO 2 /km, which is 5.3 % below the 2021 average (114.1 g CO 2 /km) and 27 % below the level of 2019.
