The EU and its Member States have committed to putting biodiversity on a path to recovery by 2030. The EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 is the cornerstone of nature conservation in the EU. and a key element European Green Deal.
The Commission presented the strategy in May 2020. The main actions to be taken by 2030 include:
- creation protected areas on at least 30 % of EU land and sea, which will expand existing Natura 2000 areas
- restoring degraded ecosystems across the EU by 2030 through a set of concrete commitments and measures, including reducing exploitation and risks pesticides by 50 % by 2030 and plantings 3 billion trees across the EU
- allocation EUR 20 billion per year to protect and promote biodiversity through EU funds and national and private funding
- creating an ambitious global framework for biodiversity
EU countries have adopted conclusions of the Council on the strategy and approved its targeted. (More at consilium.europa.eu)
