The startling data signals that carbon removal is not scaling up fast enough to curb the climate crisis. Nat Bullard, a longtime climate writer, consultant and expert who serves on the advisory board of the energy think tank Ember, last week released his annual decarbonization package, which features 200 charts illustrating the state of climate technology.

Despite increasingly urgent calls from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to scale up carbon dioxide removal projects, the number of commercial-scale operating systems has barely budged in the past six years.

What has grown is a series of projects in the feasibility and development stages. But will these early projects develop quickly enough to make a difference in the climate? The graph suggests that the path from feasibility to operation is a very slow climb.
