Governments plan to produce 110 % more fossil fuels in 2030 than would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C, and 69 % more than would be consistent with warming at 2°C, according to a new report. Although 151 national governments have pledged to reduce their emissions to net zero, the latest projections suggest that global demand for coal, oil and gas will peak this decade, even in the absence of new policies. The combined governments’ plans would increase global coal production by 2030 and global oil and gas production by at least 2050, creating a gap between production needs and fossil fuel prospects that will continue to widen over time.
