Our food system is putting a huge strain on the environment. Food production is one of the biggest causes of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, but ultimately up to 40 percent of all food ends up as waste. Conscious eating can contribute to climate protection and support our health. Food production requires a lot of land, water and energy. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), agriculture occupies almost 40 percent of the global land surface and 70 percent of the world's available freshwater. The increasing use of fertilizers has been shown to have serious consequences for the climate, as well as for soil and water quality and biodiversity. According to the environmental foundation WWF, around 70 percent of biodiversity loss and 75 percent of deforestation are caused by food and feed production. (Komila Nabijevová)
