The report says that progress has been made since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015. Greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, based on current policies, are projected to increase by 16 percent at the time of the agreement’s adoption. Today, the projected increase is 3 percent. However, projected greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 still need to fall by 28 percent for the 2°C Paris Agreement scenario and 42 percent for the 1.5°C scenario. Today, full implementation of the unconditional Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) made under the Paris Agreement would put the world on track to limit the temperature increase to 2.9°C above pre-industrial levels this century. Full implementation of the conditional NDCs would reduce this to 2.5°C. The report calls on all countries to accelerate the economy-wide low-carbon transformation. Countries with greater capacity and responsibility for emissions will need to take more ambitious measures and support developing countries that are striving for low-emission development. (UNEP)
