Climate protection is too dominated by scientists and engineers and weakened by a lack of historians, philosophers and artists. As Cop28 approaches, I am preparing with various climate organizations and coalitions. But as a historian, I can't help but feel a little out of place. When I attend climate policy events, it's rare to meet another humanist. Most experts are either scientists or at least study social sciences. This gap between the sciences and the humanities must be challenged in climate protection spaces. We need more humanists in the climate space because we have a lot to contribute to the pursuit of a just and sustainable world. The lack of humanists in climate activism is due to the prevailing disciplinary forces between science and the humanities. Climate change is woven into our education systems around the world almost exclusively through science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects. This is a missed opportunity to integrate climate education through a multidisciplinary approach that fully engages all learners with different strengths. (Kwolanne Felix)
We need more humanists in the climate campaign
