EU greenhouse gas emissions fell last year, but accelerated efforts are still needed to meet ambitious 2030 targets

Now that most of the EU's climate and energy legislation is in place within of the "Fit for 55" package , the EU and its member states are working towards the targets according to the Europe 2023 Trends and Forecasts report, which details the progress made. Since greenhouse gas emissions are returned to a downward trajectory after the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Member States also announced a higher level of ambition for reductions by 2030 and thousands of national policies and measures to achieve climate and energy targets . While the report highlights some encouraging signs of progress , also emphasizes that to achieve the ambitious goals set for the end of this decade  it will be necessary to at least double the effort.
