Having net zero emissions means the point at which the emissions of greenhouse gases released by humans into the air are balanced by the emissions removed from the air. Think of it as a scale. Emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases tip the scale, and the goal of net zero is to bring the scale back into balance.
Achieving this balance requires two things.
- Reduction of emissions released from human activity closer to zero.
- Eliminating emissions that are difficult to reduce.
Achieving net zero means we can still create some emissions. But as long as they are offset by initiatives that reduce GHGs already in the atmosphere. There are a number carbon removal solutions and technologies, which are developed to absorb CO2 from the air and store it. So reducing and eliminating emissions is net zero in the global race.
