Climate Change: No Nation's No. 1 Problem?

According to preliminary results from the World Meteorological Organization, last month was the warmest September ever recorded worldwide – the latest in a series of temperature records. Yet climate change is still not at the forefront of many people’s minds, according to data from the statistical office Statista Consumer Insights. Respondents in none of the 21 countries surveyed collectively ranked climate change as the most important issue for their own country when asked to name the issues that matter most to them. Switzerland comes closest to climate change, with the second-highest number of respondents citing it as a serious issue, behind rising prices/inflation. Overall, this is more of an expression of the Swiss’ concerns, with only 32 percent still calling climate change a serious issue. Despite ranking fourth in France and Germany, climate change was seen as a major issue by more people, at 41 percent and 37 percent respectively. In Spain, the figure was as high as 39 percent, despite climate change only ranking eighth. Similarly, developing countries like Mexico and India may have a list of other issues on which more people agree. However, recognition of climate change as a major issue was only slightly less widespread among the population than in developed countries, at around 30-33 percent. (Katharina Buchholz) ,
