Analysis published in the journal Nature Climate Change shows how cities can organize a wide range of ecological solutions, such as parks, street improvements and rooftop gardens, to not only capture carbon emissions , but helped reduce them. The study was carried out by scientists from Sweden, the US and China. It recommends the most effective approaches to natural carbon sequestration in 54 cities in the EU. And it shows how combining these steps with other climate measures can enable cities to reach net zero carbon and actually reduce emissions by an average of 17.4 percent. Zahra Kalantari, associate professor of water and environmental engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, says the researchers focused on indirect ways in which so-called “nature-based solutions” can contribute to carbon neutrality. “Nature-based solutions not only offset part of a city’s emissions, but can also contribute to reducing emissions and resource consumption,” says Kalantari.
