How carbon emissions are acidifying our ocean (Archive)

Ocean acidification is a consequence of increasing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), a greenhouse gas that causes climate change. The ocean absorbs about one-third of all CO 2 human-induced, causing a change in seawater chemistry called ocean acidification. It poses a serious threat to marine life, the health of ecosystems and the people whose livelihoods depend on the ocean. When the CO 2 dissolves in seawater, forms carbonic acid (H 2 WHAT 3 ), releasing hydrogen ions (H+) and increasing the acidity of the oceans. Acidity plays a key role in many biological mechanisms, including calcification. (Vladimir Tarakanov)
