Forests "chew" the country's most complex climate problem: planet-warming methane produced by livestock and landfills. Scientists at Scion and the University of Lincoln are studying how microbes living in the forest floor suck up and eat methane, destroying the powerful greenhouse gas. The first results showed that the rate of methane flashing could be even higher than expected. Exotic forests absorb methane, which contributed to 43 % of the country's emissions in 2021.
