Understanding whether a company is doing the right thing for the climate can be tricky. We can simplify it by asking: if every society acted in this way, would we solve the climate crisis? If the answer is no, then society must change its actions until they are compatible with our journey to a net zero world.
If we agree that every company should contribute fairly to our shared journey to global net zero, then it should be responsible for all its emissions and take action to reduce them. This includes scope 1 (direct emissions owned or controlled by the company), scope 2 (emissions the company causes indirectly from the energy it buys and uses) and scope 3 (emissions not produced by the company itself, but those for which it is indirectly responsible up and down its value chain).
