SCIENTISTS WARN OF ALARMING TREND IN GLOBAL SPREAD OF DISEASE: 'THE PERFECT STORM OF DISEASE IS COMING'

Scientists in Peru are using their knowledge of a changing climate to better understand its link to rising cases of diseases spread by rodents and mosquitoes, according to The Washington Post, which noted that "a perfect disease storm is brewing." The relationship between climate and public health has been studied for centuries. As our climate changes, so do these connections. In Peru, the number of cases of dengue fever, malaria and leptospirosis reached an all-time high in 2023, the Post reports. In the capital city of Lima alone, the number of dengue cases has increased to 30,000 in 2023, compared to less than 1,000 in 2022, according to Peru's Ministry of Health. Peru is not alone in seeing an increase in disease outbreaks due in part to the effects of climate change. (Talia Resnick)
