Today, the German government adopted a draft law on adaptation to climate change, which was submitted by the Federal Ministry of the Environment. The law creates the first strategic framework for preventive climate adaptation at all administrative levels in Germany. Cities and municipalities have a special responsibility when it comes to taking specific preventive measures to address the consequences of the climate crisis. The aim of this bill is therefore to impose on the federal states the obligation to ensure systematic and comprehensive strategies for adapting to climate change at their administrative level, as well as concepts for adapting to climate change for the areas of municipalities and districts. By law, the German government also undertakes to promote a preventive climate adaptation strategy with measurable goals in the future.
The first German adaptation law will enter into force in mid-2024
