Empowering marginalized communities in carbon markets

The climate crisis is one of the most pressing problems facing humanity today. Its adverse effects are being felt globally, with rising temperatures, rising sea levels, changing precipitation patterns and more frequent extreme weather events.  However, the effects of the climate crisis disproportionately affect marginalized communities who have contributed the least to the problem. Carbon markets are rapidly emerging as a key mechanism through which climate action is facilitated globally. These markets set a price on carbon to incentivize emissions reductions and direct investment in sustainable solutions. However, marginalized communities often lack access and agency in these spaces. Strengthening their position in carbon markets can thus revolutionize the fight against climate change by driving inclusiveness, social justice and greater emissions reductions. (Hindustan Times)
