EU aims to capture and store carbon emissions to fight climate change

As the world grapples with increasingly worrying environmental changes, the European Union (EU) is stepping up its game in the fight against climate change. By proposing plans to capture and store hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050, the EU is demonstrating its commitment to helping industries align with Europe's climate goals.

EU plan to manage industrial carbon emissions

The European Commission is stressing the need for political and financial support for carbon capture and storage technology for the EU to achieve its goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050. A leaked draft of an “industrial carbon management plan” reveals the EU executive’s belief that the bloc will need to capture the equivalent of 450 million tonnes of CO2 each year to meet that goal. The ambitious plan, due to be presented on 6 February, is linked to an interim target of cutting emissions by 2040, which scientific advisers recommend at least 90% below 1T3T.
