The European Commission published a new Project catalog Missions. This document, prepared by Manny Sidhu and Lee Madigan for CINEA, provides key information on 46 projects funded under Horizon Europe. These projects form the heart of local and regional adaptation efforts, delivering practical solutions to real climate risks and helping communities respond to the growing impacts of climate change.
The main supporter and key element of the European Mission on Climate Change Adaptation is Mission Implementation Platform (MIP4Adapt). MIP4Adapt provides strategic coordination, tools and tailored support to help regional and local authorities turn ambitions into action. It acts as the backbone of the Mission’s implementation and provides a collaborative space for the entire climate adaptation ecosystem. Authorities thus gain access to the knowledge, resources and networks they need to translate plans into effective adaptation actions. MIP4Adapt support includes strategic coordination, targeted technical assistance, progress monitoring and knowledge sharing through the Mission Portal.
The catalogue brings together information on each of the Mission's 46 projects. It highlights their objectives, achievements, climate risks they address and the local and regional authorities involved. The projects cover a wide range of sectors and reflect the diversity of Europe's geography, climate challenges and adaptation needs. Through close collaboration with local stakeholders, these projects develop and scale up nature-based (NbS), technological and social solutions, strengthen local governance and citizen engagement, increase knowledge and capacity and support the Mission's objectives in the areas of preparedness, transformation and resistance.
The catalogue allows users to identify synergies across themes, risks and regions, explore specific projects and facilitate collaboration and mutual learning. It is intended for a variety of groups including policymakers, local authorities, researchers, practitioners and citizens.
The projects address a variety of climate risks, such as coastal erosion, drought, extreme heat, floods, heavy rainfall, landslides, rainfall changes, sea level rise, strong winds, storms, rising surface air temperatures, tropical cyclones and forest fires. They are divided into several main thematic areas:
- Cross-cutting projects
- Support to regions
- Ecosystems and natural solutions (NbS) (Ecosystems and nature-based solutions)
- Finance and local economic systems
- Health and well-being (Health and well-being)
- Infrastructure
- Land use and food systems
- Stakeholder and citizen engagement
- Water management
These 46 projects, such as ARSINOE, CLIMAAX, CARDIMED or MOUNTADAPT, are being developed, tested and demonstrated across Europe to deliver innovative approaches, transferable models and tangible results on the ground. Together, MIP4Adapt and the Mission’s projects form a strong framework for cooperation to support the EU Mission’s objectives of preparedness, transformation and resilience.
