The Paris Olympics are set to be the most sustainable games ever. Even before the mega event started, however, there was criticism. A maximum of 1.75 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents are expected to be generated in connection with the Games. Organizers have taken a lot to achieve this ambitious goal.
According to the organizers, the Olympic Games in Paris will be the greenest and most inclusive games ever. But what lies behind this confident statement? We analyze whether climate-friendly games can really be successful in the categories of water, mobility, social compatibility and CO2 footprint. We determine whether the climate will ultimately win these games in a small, fictitious medal table.
The Olympic Games are organized by the IOC International Olympic Committee. It was created there in 1999 Agenda 21 for sustainable development and in 2016 a sustainability strategy was adopted. However, with only moderate success.
