The 2040 climate target for emissions reductions proposed by the European Commission on 6 February does not include phase-out dates for coal, oil and gas, a "huge omission" according to Greenpeace Europe, which says that "the burning of fossil fuels for energy accounts for around 75% of all human-generated greenhouse gas emissions in the EU".

Silvia Pastorelli, Greenpeace EU climate campaigner, says: “It’s like trying to prevent lung cancer without any plan to quit smoking. It’s crystal clear that if we are to avoid the worst consequences of climate collapse, fossil fuels must be phased out quickly.
