EU CO2 emissions from fossil fuels return to 1960s levels European Union (EU) fossil fuel O2 levels are the lowest in 60 years after an 8 % year-on-year decline in 2023, according to a new report. Switching from fossil fuels to cleaner electricity sources accounts for more than half of the reduction, an analysis by the Center for Energy and Clean Air Research (CREA) shows. In 2023, the EU deployed a record level of solar and wind renewable energy capacity supported by hydro and nuclear power.
CO2 emissions per capita in the EU are steadily decreasing over time. "An eight percent reduction in emissions should be celebrated," he told the The Guardian Issac Levi, CREA analyst.
"But more needs to be done to wean the EU off fossil fuels, reduce dependence on kerosene like Russia, while keeping the world a better place for future generations," he said. (Johnny Wood)
