International Education Day 2024: Is the education system overlooking climate change?

Education is an essential tool in the fight against climate change. It is a leading predictor of climate change awareness among younger generations, enabling them to become informed citizens and take decisive action to protect the planet. In the classroom, young people can learn about the impacts of global warming and how to incorporate sustainability into their daily decisions. Learning about the causes of climate change also helps eliminate fear of the issue while raising awareness of the destructive effects of anthropogenic activities and creates momentum for more sustainable practices and lifestyles. One solution proposed by the Drawdown Project suggested that if each student reduced their carbon emissions by 2.86 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and climate change education increased from less than 1 % to 16 % secondary school students by 2050, implementing education could reduce emissions . by almost 19 GT CO2 . Current annual emissions are 34 GT, which means that by introducing more climate education to less than a quarter of high school students, we could cut annual CO2 emissions by more than half.
