The European Commission is set to recommend that the EU cut its net greenhouse gas emissions by 90 % by 2040 compared to 1990 levels to ensure the bloc can reach net zero emissions a decade later, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The European Union is proposing its first climate target for 2040 to bridge the gap between its existing targets of cutting net emissions by 55 % by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
The European Parliament elections in June are a new test of the political appetite to push ahead with Europe's ambitious green agenda - which faces pushback from some governments and industries worried about the costs, even as climate change is causing more devastating heatwaves, floods and forest fires across Europe. The European Commission will present its recommendation to cut emissions by 90 % by 2040 on February 6, sources told Reuters.
