Chronological overview - Paris Agreement on climate change

2023 – EU at the forefront of global climate action at COP 28. At the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28), the EU and its 27 Member States played a leading role in reaching an agreement calling for a joint global effort to move away from fossil fuels in the energy sector.

Other key outcomes of COP 28:

  • global commitments in the field of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency
  • the launch of a new loss and damage fund (to which the EU and its countries have pledged more than half of the initial funding)
  • the need for immediate action so that global emissions peak no later than 2025 and global greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 43 % by 2030 and 60 % by 2035
  • global goal in the field of adaptation
