The Commission published its assessment of EU Member States' draft national energy and climate plans (NECP) and issued recommendations to help Member States raise their ambitions in line with the EU's 2030 targets. Final plans must be submitted by June 30, 2024The draft updated NECPs bring us closer to meeting the EU's 2030 targets and implementing recently adopted legislation. However, it is clear that further efforts are needed, also in light of the outcome of COP28 and the global call for accelerated action in this decade.

In today's rating The Commission calls on Member States to step up their efforts on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and set out clearer plans for how they intend to adapt to climate change. It also calls on them to better prepare for the increased use of renewable energy sources and improve energy efficiency measures. Further measures are also needed to empower consumers, improve energy security and support European companies in strengthening their competitiveness. Greater efforts will be needed to ensure access to affordable sources of finance and to stimulate key investments needed for the competitiveness of European industry.
