In Europe, the recent outbreak of bark beetle has received a lot of attention as it has affected large swaths of spruce forests, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. Remote sensing is instrumental in detecting and understanding global changes, and great progress has been made in its use to monitor bark beetle occurrence. On 22 November 2022, an online JRC expert meeting reviewed the state of the art and challenges in using remote sensing to detect and map bark beetle outbreaks in Europe. It was attended by more than 40 scientists and representatives from three Directorates-General of the European Commission.
