Ministers and senior officials from nearly 40 countries from around the world joined leaders of international organizations and representatives of industry, civil society and youth organizations in Madrid on Monday for the International Climate and Energy Summit. The summit, co-hosted by the Spanish government, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, and the International Energy Agency, sought to build a broad coalition behind efforts to keep the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C within reach. Co-chaired by Spanish Vice-President Teresa Ribera and IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, the summit opened with statements from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and COP28 President-designate Sultan Al Jaber. It aimed to strengthen support for measures to expand clean energy and reduce demand for fossil fuels ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) to meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement. The summit brought together high-level policymakers to discuss how to facilitate a just energy transition, as well as setting and achieving global targets for renewables and energy efficiency. Industry and civil society representatives also shared their views in a roundtable discussion with governments.
