Heat, other extreme weather events, UV radiation, allergic diseases, air pollution damage and mental health: A new status report looks at the many effects of climate change. The contribution is the second part of three reports on the topic of climate change and health, which are created under the leadership of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). A report on the status of the impacts of climate change on infectious diseases was published in June this year. The authors see a need for further research and action on the focal topic of heat, although the evidence about the health effects of heat and awareness of thermal protection have grown in recent years. The population, healthcare and municipalities are not particularly prepared for extreme events. The authors of the report made various recommendations for measures, which, among other things, call for action plans for heat.  According to the RKI, the estimated number of people who died last year was 4,500. Thanks to new calculation models from the RKI, the number is lower than originally estimated as of the end of June this year.
