Instead of embracing a heightened sense of urgency and prioritizing strategic planning, most have treated this as if it were a story from another planet, rather than one that directly affects the only one we have. This is a suicidal act of denial and stubborn refusal to change our behaviors and habits, which threatens to cause disaster for humanity and the planet itself. At a time when the world needs something reminiscent of what the British call the old “lightning spirit” and leadership that leads from the front on climate change, the general reaction is more reminiscent of the last days of Pompeii.
