'Greenest ever': How Paris is trying to halve the Olympics' carbon footprint

The 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games are being hailed by organisers as the “greenest” ever. Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 organising committee, said the games would be “historic for the climate”, a view echoed by all involved, notably the green-minded mayor of Paris, Anne Hildago. The target is to more than halve the carbon emissions of London 2012 and Rio 2016 – which produced 3.4 million and 3.6 million tonnes of CO2 respectively – to less than 1.5 million tonnes of CO2. That’s less than Tokyo 2021, which produced 1.9 million tonnes of CO2 despite not losing spectators due to the Covid-19 pandemic. (Cyrielle CABOT)
