CCUS involves the capture of CO2, generally from large point sources such as power generation or industrial facilities that use either fossil fuels or biomass as fuel. If the captured CO2 is not used on site, it is compressed and transported by pipeline, ship, rail or truck to be used in various applications, or injected into deep geological formations such as depleted oil and gas deposits or saline aquifers. About 40 commercial facilities are already in operation using carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) for industrial processes, fuel transformation and power generation. CCUS deployment has historically lagged behind expectations, but momentum has picked up significantly in recent years, with more than 500 projects in various stages of development across the CCUS value chain.
