Ahead of a key meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) this summer, governments are under increasing pressure to address the shipping industry's huge climate impact. With negotiations looming on regulating greenhouse gas emissions in the sector, the World Maritime Court has been told that states have a legal responsibility to address the climate impacts of shipping. The shipping industry is lagging far behind others in addressing its climate impact, having been around for more than six years failed to limit greenhouse gas emissions. It contributes approximately 3 % to global emissions, but if no action is taken, it can increase significantly.
