Europe cannot reach net zero without nuclear power, says Rolls-Royce boss

Europe cannot achieve its net zero carbon emissions target by 2050 unless it adopts nuclear power, the CEO of Rolls-Royce said. Tufan Erginbilgic argued that new small reactors of the kind his company is developing will play a key role in helping to decarbonize electricity grids across the continent. Speaking at the Paris Air Show, he said: “I’m not sure Europe can move to a net zero world without nuclear. SMR [small modular reactors], frankly, compared to a traditional nuclear power plant, has a lot of advantages because it’s much smaller. And therefore the risk profile is much smaller.” (Howard Mustoe)
