MPs approve amendments that will weaken nature protection

Despite heavy criticism from conservationists, MPs have weakened nature protection and public involvement in decision-making processes. Environmental impact assessment ultimately remains under the Ministry of Environment. MPs today approved two bills as part of the reform of construction legislation, which also fundamentally change environmental protection. The amendment, which takes the competence to assess environmental impacts from the Ministry of Environment and gives them to the new Construction Authority, was proposed by three MPs from the We Are Family movement – Jaroslav Karahuta, Miloš Svrček and Jozef Lukáč. With the amendment, the authors of the proposal ultimately left this competence in the hands of the Ministry of Environment. However, the amendment will significantly limit public involvement in decision-making processes. Another amending bill from the We Are Family movement, as well as OĽaNO (Vašečka, Kozelová, Szőllős, Vetrák and others), which was approved by MPs, ensures the irremovability of the head of this authority for seven years.(Jana Kubisova)
