Rice fields threatened by extreme rainfall due to climate change could threaten global food supply

A study led by researchers at Peking University in China suggests that extreme rainfall will significantly threaten global food production due to climate change and accompanying extreme weather events. The paper, "Extreme Rainfall Cuts One-Twelfth of China's Rice Crop Over the Past Two Decades," published in the journal Nature Food , used long-term weather observations and manipulation experiments with multiscale precipitation to investigate the magnitude and mechanisms extreme precipitation . effect on rice yield. The study found that the reduction caused by extreme rainfall was comparable to the reduction caused by extreme heat over the past two decades, with up to 8.1 % of lost yield estimated by 2100.
