By taking small steps at home, you can save energy and money and help protect the climate by reducing emissions. Households produce roughly a quarter of all direct CO2 emissions that occur in the EU today.
In the kitchen
- Buy energy-efficient appliances. Many everyday products in the EU, such as refrigerators, dishwashers and ovens, have an EU energy label. to help you choose an energy-efficient model. The rating ranges from A+++ (most efficient) to G (least efficient). For example, an A+++ class dishwasher uses only half the energy of a D class dishwasher.
- Check that the pipe is properly sealed. If you need to replace your oven, choose an A-rated model – you could save around €200 over its lifetime compared to a D-rated oven.
- Avoid washing dishes by hand if you have a dishwasher. Modern dishwashers use less water and energy – and most have an eco mode – but only use it when it’s full!
- Boil only as much water as you need. If you have only left hot water in the kettle for a few minutes, you do not need to boil it again.
