UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said during a visit to Somalia that „it is intolerable that Somalis, who have done little to contribute to the climate crisis, are suffering its terrible consequences,“ Reuters reported. The news comes as some 8.3 million Somalis, nearly half the population, are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance as they face the threat of „full-blown famine“ after a drought that killed 43,000 people last year. Guterres noted that only 15% of the $2.6 billion the country needs this year has been met. The East African Republic reports that Guterres has already called for „massive“ international support for Somalia during a so-called „solidarity visit“ to the Horn of Africa country. Agence France-Presse, meanwhile, reports that „a severe drought in North Africa has left Tunisian farmers bracing for a catastrophically poor harvest.“.
