The world’s biggest sources of false or misleading weather information include powerful nations including Russia and China, whose diplomats will be attending, according to a report released this week. Others include fossil fuel companies and online provocateurs who make money by sharing claims that global warming is a hoax. They spread a variety of, and often debunked, falsehoods: Humans are not responsible for climate change; recent fires were caused by arson rather than hotter, drier conditions; the world is cooling; oil and gas giants are leading the charge on carbon neutrality; and environmental warnings are an excuse for authoritarian elites to destabilize the developing world and force everyone to lock themselves down and go on a diet of insects and lab-grown food.
