To save the planet, we must start from the global south

Delegates from the countries most affected by climate change and resource exploitation have come to Italy for the first World Congress for Climate Justice with new perspectives on saving the Earth. Imagine you are in your favorite forest or park and at some point it is leveled because there may be oil underneath. You think you have inherited land from your family that has belonged to them for generations and someone is telling you that it is not actually yours.  Pedro and Rosa Marina know what they are talking about. They come from Ecuador and Mexico and have come to Italy to attend the first World Congress for Climate Justice, which is taking place in Milan from 12 to 15 October. According to the activists, more sustainable development must also be fair and respectful of all peoples, which is why the voice of delegates coming mainly from the “global south”, a concept that is not just geographical, is at the heart of the congress. “We can describe the global south as the part of the world from which the North takes everything: minerals, oil, water, even fertilizers for plants and the knowledge of indigenous communities,” says Pedro Bermeo of the Ecuadorian collective YASunidos. It includes countries in Africa, South and Central America, and some Asian countries. These are the areas that are currently experiencing the most devastating effects of climate change, despite contributing the least to global emissions and resource use. These same countries often pay the price for an energy-intensive economic system that relentlessly advances, at the expense of those who have been preserving the planet's true wealth for centuries.
