Billions are being invested in carbon removal strategies to combat global warming. Will they work?

In August, the Biden administration provided  $1.2 billion in federal funding to launch a project designed to suck carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to offset global warming . Projects like these, commonly known as carbon removal or carbon capture , focus on using industrial technologies to suck up excess carbon from the atmosphere and store it underground for the long term through CO2 pipeline .The Biden-funded direct air capture project will be located in Texas and Louisiana and is estimated to be the largest such project in the world. Similar methods are used in 18 facilities worldwide and other projects are trying to achieve similar results by capturing carbon in the ocean. This relatively new industry is now backed by significant funding, but time will tell how effective these types of projects will be, and some doubt they are ready to absorb the vast amounts of carbon that need to be removed at a sustainable cost.
