Stove offsets cause millions of false emissions reductions

A Climate Home News investigation has found that projects in India linked to Enking, the self-proclaimed world's largest producer of carbon credits, have vastly overstated the climate benefits. Improved stove projects are often confused with pure cooking schemes. But while the latter help households switch from polluting fuels to cleaner ones like gas or even solar, improved stoves simply dispense more efficient appliances still powered by the same fuel, in this case firewood. The assumption is that if poor households are given better-designed stoves, they will use less firewood, resulting in less carbon emissions. This greenhouse gas, which is prevented from being released into the atmosphere, is then converted into carbon offsets that corporations, governments and individuals can buy to offset their own emissions.
