What is the carbon footprint of social networks?

It's not necessarily obvious to everyone, but our digital usage has a significant impact on the environment. The company Greenspector published a study on the carbon impact of the most popular social network applications, and the TikTok application is the one with the highest ecological impact with 4.93 gEqCO2 per minute (gram equivalent of CO2). To conduct this study, tests were conducted with a Galaxy S7 smartphone (running Android 8) scrolling through each app's news feed for one minute. Below is a ranking of social media apps with the highest carbon footprint:

  1. The latest addition from the social network TikTok (4.93 gEqCO2 per minute) has the largest carbon impact.
  2. Reddit (4.54 gEqCO2 per minute)
  3. Pinterest (3.53 gEqCO2 per minute)
  4. Snapchat (2.03 gEqCO2 per minute)
  5. Instagram (1.91 gEqCO2 per minute)
