The World Meteorological Organization said El Niño weather conditions, which are associated with a sharp rise in global temperatures, have developed in the tropical Pacific for the first time in seven years. The WMO says governments around the world should mobilize preparations now to limit the impacts of expected temperature extremes and protect lives and livelihoods. It is said that these impacts will likely be more noticeable next year than this year. El Niño is a naturally occurring climate event associated with a pattern of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. (George Lee, RTE)
