The cheapest option for South Africa's energy mix includes huge amounts of renewables (between 50 GW and 60 GW) by 2030 and no new coal and nuclear, the President's Commission on Climate Change (PCC) has recommended. On Thursday, the commission published its recommendations for the country's electricity system. The recommendations are based on extensive stakeholder consultation, a review of research and modelling. The recommendations report follows a request by Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe for input into the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which maps out which technologies need to be sourced from to meet demand.
