Well, the EU has finally woken up to its role in all of this. The people in power have realised that cutting down forests anywhere in the world is not really sustainable. After all, forests are important carbon sinks. They absorb carbon dioxide from the air, store it and help us fight climate change. But if we are losing forest cover too quickly, it is damaging our collective efforts. And guess what is the biggest contributor to this deforestation? Agriculture!!! Between 2001 and 2015, agriculture was responsible for 39 % of global tree cover loss. So the EU is now doing something ambitious. It recently passed a law called the European Union Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) with the sole aim of slowing down deforestation. This means that if a product traces its origin back to land deforested after December 2020, the EU simply won’t allow it to enter or leave the region. It’s banning such trade. Both imports and exports. And to kick off the initiative, the rule will apply to what it considers some of the biggest culprits – palm oil, beef, cocoa, coffee, soy and timber.
